The role will contribute to establishing the AAV capsid discovery and engineering platform to support AAV drug development. A main focus of this role is to develop novel AAV capsids with enhanced properties, in particular the ability to transduce specific tissue and cell types. The discovery of these novel capsids will greatly facilitate the translation of company’s rich pipeline programs from in vitro through in vivo proof of concept and ultimately the clinic. The position requires extensive knowledge in bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, virology, structural biology, and genetics, with extensive working experience in AAV capsid discovery and engineering. The title will be determined based on the applicant’s relevant working experience.

Key duties and responsibilities include but not limited to

  • Contribute to establishing the capsid discovery and engineering platform
  • Implement and utilize bioinformatics and machine learning to design, screen, and/or enhance novel AAV with tailored properties
  • Design, develop and implement the production of AAV capsid libraries
  • Characterize and validate novel AAV capsid libraries by NGS
  • Establish approaches to identify novel AAV capsid variants that transduce specific cell types in both rodents and NHPs
  • Communicate and manage external CRO to support research activities
  • Maintain detailed and well-organized documentation with best industry practice

Qualifications & Skills

  • A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, molecular biology, cell biology, structural biology, virology, immunology, or related discipline is required
  • Deep understanding of AAV capsid biology
  • Extensive hands-on experience in AAV capsid discovery by rational design and directed evolution from start to finish is highly desirable
  • Extensive experience in developing NGS workflows for capsid discovery
  • Bioinformatic analysis of NGS data from Illumina and Nanopore sequencing
  • Extensive and excellent hands-on skills and experience with cell and molecular biology techniques, and assay development are required
  • Experience in developing procedures for the extraction of high quality of RNA and DNA from various mammalian tissues and scaling these procedures to high throughput workflows
